Firefighters were containing a four-day-old fire that blazed through a timber plantation outside Tulbagh in the Western Cape, the Working on Fire community programme said on Wednesday.
“The fire has stood up at Suurvlak. It is burning through timber and fynbos in the plantation and is not near residential areas,” spokeswoman Leanne McKrill said.
She said surrounding fires were under control and being tackled by six teams.
The fire started on Saturday, with families evacuated from a nearby informal settlement on Monday. They had since returned to their homes, McKrill said.
