Four people were injured, two of whom critically, when a hot air balloon went down after colliding with electricity lines on the Nooitgedacht Farm on the outskirts of Stellenbosch on the R304.
The cause of the incident and the series of events preceding it remain uncertain.
Common cause information indicates that the balloon took off from Joostenbergvlakte and while over the winery in Stellenbosch was pushed into the overhead cables by a strong side wind.
Witnesses reported that the basket then fell to the ground. Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that of the six occupants of the basket, four had been injured, two critically so.
They immediately initiated care and set about stabilising the injured. A woman in a critical condition was airlifted by the Air Mercy Services Helicopter Skymed1 to a private hospital in Stellenbosch.
The other injured were transported by ambulance to various medical facilities in the area for the treatment they required.
