No more sightings of hyenas in Kwazulu Natal

NATIONAL NEWS - Two hyenas in northern KwaZulu-Natal have not been seen since wildlife authorities called off a search for them.

"There has been nothing. No goats killed or anything," Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife spokesman Musa Mntambo said on Wednesday.

"We suspect they may have moved into another area."

The search for the pair, which had been on the loose near Ulundi, was called off on Sunday.

"During our extensive five-day hunt for [the] hyenas we did not see any hyena, nor detect any new spoors which could have indicated the presence of hyenas," biodiversity conservation director Bheki Khoza said in a statement at the time.

Mntambo said it was believed the hyenas went back to the Emakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park from where it was believed they escaped.

Ezemvelo appealed to Ulundi residents to "relax and continue doing their daily chores like they did before the sighting of hyenas".

Rangers realised the animals were on the loose after a couple reported seeing a lion. Officials went to view the tracks and found they were not those of a lion, but of a hyena. The two hyenas were sighted by wildlife authorities at 2am last week Wednesday, when a trap was set for the "lion".
