Cape Town - Two people were killed and many others injured when a tornado ripped through the Free State on Saturday night.
Netcare911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said in a statement that the “tornado moved off the dam and laid waste” to the man’s house, “razing it to the ground”.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and found the man in a critical condition after being crushed by rubble. Despite efforts to resuscitate the man, he died.
A Free State woman was also killed when the tornado tore through four shacks on a farm outside Bethlehem.
Meanwhile, the National Sea Rescue Institute said 14 young men between the ages of 18 and 22 were injured when their house collapsed following the tornado.
The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said rescue volunteers, police and paramedics were trying to free the young men who were trapped under the rubble of the house they were staying in. One of the men sustained serious injuries.
"In further damage the jetty at Manten Marina, Deneysville, has been ripped apart, one 7.5 ton boat was blown off its trailer, a number of boats have been ripped from their moorings and a further two boats were blown off their trailers.
