Tornado rips through Deneysville
On Saturday, 23rd June, 2012 Dick Manten, NSRI Vaal Dam station commander, said: “At 18h45 NSRI Vaal Dam volunteer rescue duty crew were activated following a tornado that ripped through Deneysville and the Vaal Dam area tearing the jetty apart causing at least three houses to collapse, one with fourteen young adults, aged between 18 and 22, believed to have been enjoying a weekend holiday together from their school and college holidays, trapped under rubble from one of the houses in the Rose Bay area.
“In further damage the jetty at Manten Marina, Deneysville, has been ripped apart, one 7.5 ton boat was blown off its trailer, a number of boats have been ripped from their moorings and a further two boats were blown off their trailers.
“At this stage our NSRI Vaal Dam rescue volunteers, Police, private and Provincial EMS ambulance services and EMS rescue teams and the Fire and Rescue Services are concentrating efforts on the collapsed house attempting to free the 14 young adults from their entrapment. One serious injury has been assessed by paramedics on-scene while rescue teams continue efforts to free those trapped and to triage further injuries.
“Assessments are also being made to determine where further damage has been caused and if there are any additional people injured, at risk or trapped in rubble from collapsed structures or vehicles.”
