The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Fire leaves 200 people displaced in Hout Bay – 1 adult dies
A fire occurred at 01:03 on Sunday, 15 July 2012 at Mandela Park Informal Settlement in Hout Bay.
It is estimated that the blaze destroyed 50 shacks and the fire crews reported that a unidentified adult person has died in the fire.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has been dispatched to the incident at first daylight this morning and will be assisting the approximately 200 persons with food parcels, blankets, clothing and building material.
The disaster response teams will also make arrangements for the victims to be provided with trauma counselling as a result of the loss of life.
An inquest docket has been opened and the SAPS will investigate the incident.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
