Johannesburg – Die Vaalrivierstelsel is in “groot gevaar” weens die onwettige gebruik van water, giftige afvalstowwe en munisipale waterverliese.
Dié rivier verskaf water aan sowat 60% van die land se ekonomie en 45% van die land se inwoners.
Linda Page, woordvoerder van die departement van waterwese, sê 244 miljoen kubieke meter water is verlede jaar onwettig gebruik.
“Ons weet die grootste skuldiges is boere in die gebied,” het Page aan Business Day gesê.
Water waarvoor die munisipaliteit, weens verlies en foute, geen inkomste verdien nie, is sowat 36% van die totale watergebruik.
Om water meer volhoubaar te maak moet Suid-Afrika teen volgende jaar onwettige besproeiing uitroei en die tweede fase van die Lesotho Hoogland-waterprojek implementeer.
