Unattended electrical stove overheats and results in tragic incident – 2 people dead

A fire occurred at 14:17 on Sunday, 19 August 2012 at Overcome Heights Informal Settlement in Seawinds, Cape Town.

The fire destroyed 4 shacks resulting in the displacement of 17 people.

The fire caused the death of Norman Veldtman (39 years) and Fadio Hendricks (4 years).

The City’s disaster response teams provided hot meals, clothing, blankets, baby packs and building material to the victims earlier today.

The families of the deceased are traumatised by the loss of life and the City has made arrangements for the provision of emergency psychosocial trauma counselling.

It is suspected that an electrical stove was left unattended and overheated that resulted in the tragic incident.

An appeal is made to residents to exercise caution and not to leave electrical appliances unattended that can result in accidental raging fires, the destruction of valuable property and loss of life.

An inquest docket has been opened to investigate the incident.
