Five men were injured, one of whom critically, when they were electrocuted while performing maintenance on a roadside electrical distribution box in Brakpan this morning.
The cause of the incident and the series of events preceding it remain unclear and will form the subject of a department of labour investigation.
Common cause information indicates that the workers had opened the distribution box which they had thought had been isolated from the power grid. The men came into contact with live wires within in and current passed through their bodies.
Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find one man was in a critical condition, having sustained severe burns to his head and torso. The other men were in a moderate condition.
All were treated and stabilised at the scene and transported by ambulance to a private hospital nearby for further treatment.
