The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

HAMNET weekly report 7/10/2012
After careful planning and much shuffling around of ideas – which are still forthcoming, the Hamnet Internet website was launched on the 1st of October.
The response to the site so far has been very positive and Dawie ZR6DHC and myself intend to listen carefully to ideas and suggestions to enhance and grow the site.
We will eventually fully link the site with the SARL website whereby all information will be embedded in the Hamnet website and any information required from the SARL website will automatically be obtained via a link to the Hamnet website. The benefit here is that we only need to update one site and not two – which could cause confusion should we do one and miss the other.
Dawie has created a Blog but at this stage we are still making sure that it is fully functional. The idea is that items are sent to either me or Dawie before it is posted on the Blog.
As time goes on, more general information links will be added so that those wishing to obtain information regarding disasters and information on cyclones, typhoons etc. need only look at our site and click on the related website.
The new Hamnet ID card is still in a state of being finalised. I still have about 40 odd cards of the old format on hand but as soon as we decide on the new format, we will switch to the new card. We were hoping to enlist the services of a group who could produce the cards for us on a regular basis and renew cards every 3 years, but this specific group seems to have gone out of business. I still need to establish where I can get transparent sleeves which are credit card size.
Schools reopen on Monday and Tuesday and soon it is ‘heads down’ for the final exam of the year. We wish all candidates well!
Reporting for Hamnet, this is Francois Botha – ZS6BUU.
