At least 130 people died in fires across Cape Town during 2011.
According to the City of Cape Town it was an increase from 2010, in which fires claimed the lives of at least 104 people.
Disaster Management's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said they are doing what they can to curb this.
“It is a marked increase of persons that lost their lives as a result of fires. The City of Cape Town has embarked on an extensive public awareness campaign,” he said.
He said officials will be visiting Atlantis on Friday as part of their public fire safety awareness programme.
