The colleagues of a lifeguard who drowned at Kleinmond beach said they felt despondent and saddened by his death.
The 22-year-old was practicing a safety routine in the water on Wednesday when he was overcome by a large wave.
Several of his colleagues tried to resuscitate him, before paramedics declared him dead on scene.
Lifeguard company Tower 13's Walied Damon, said they are afraid the public would view their services in a negative light.
“A lot of the guys feel despondent because of the way they were treated which is human. We try our best but things do happen,” he said.
Damon said his lifeguards are more than happy to return to duty.
“At the moment the guys are at the beach. They are doing this job, they love this job,” he said.
