Fire detection cameras reintroduced in Cape Town

Cape Town firefighters will hopefully be able to respond to fires faster thanks to the reintroduction of smoke and fire detection cameras.

The camera system was used until three years ago after which it was decommissioned.

Safety and Security mayoral committee member JP Smith explained the effectiveness of the six devices.

“We can now respond more quickly to a fire and can respond before somebody calls us.”

He said the 250,000 cameras are placed in strategic locations throughout the city including the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town International Airport and Muizenberg.

Smith added that one of the biggest advantages of the system was that it acted as a GPS device.

“It can guide the fire trucks through informal settlements and on bush trails to where the nearest road access point is. Fire vehicles will now get to their destinations quicker.”
