Two men were badly injured when they were stung by a swarm of bees in Glenwood, Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday, paramedics said.
The men, one aged 65 and the other in his 30s, were walking along a path when they disturbed a swarm of bees around noon, said ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks.
The older man was stung more than 500 times and his face and arms were badly swollen.
Paramedics used every advanced life support drug they could to stabilise him and he was taken to Greys Hospital in a critical condition.
The younger man was also treated at the scene and taken to hospital in a serious, but stable condition.
