MOSSELBAAI NEWS - It appears that oil that has been washing up on beaches in the Mossel Bay municipal area since December 2011 originates from the Voortrekker, an offshore oil and gas support vessel that sunk in the vicinity of the Gouritz River Mouth in September 1993.
According to the Municipality oil slicks were observed by a surveillance aircraft and fishermen in the general area where the vessel sank. Rough seas have apparently resulted in the wreck springing a leak and the oil surfaced as a result. Divers have in the meantime plugged the leak.
The Municipality appeals to the public to report any further incidents of oil washing up on beaches to the Municipality as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made for the cleaning up as soon as possible.
