Run away fire along the R501 in Potchefstroom

A well known family lost all their belongings yesterday in a terrible fire that completely destroyed their home. The house was destroyed after a runaway fire which was burning along the R501 just outside Potchefstroom was fueled on by strong winds. Nobody was seriously injured in the fire but sadly a horse that was trapped in the raging flames had to be put down after a vet was called and nothing could be done for the animal.

Fire fighters from Tlokwe Municipality, Rural disaster management volunteers, SANDF and the North West University volunteer firefighters together with air support from “working on fire” helicopter managed to contain and extinguish the fire in the very strong winds.

The house owner and his wife were taken to hospital privately for medical checkup and the family dog, a St. Bernard that was rescued from the burning home by volunteers was rushed to a nearby vet with smoke inhalation and minor burns. A volunteer firefighter was also rushed to hospital after he was injured in the face while trying to contain the blaze.
