Cape Town - Two separate search and rescue missions will continue in Cape Town on Thursday morning for two men presumed drowned after they were swept out to sea.
A 27-year-old man was swept out to sea at Mnandi Beach, Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.
"The search and rescue mission has been suspended and will resume at first light on Thursday morning. He is feared lost at sea."
Igshaan Ariefdien was swimming when he found himself in distress. His friend tried to rescue him when a rip current swept them both out to sea.
"The attempts made by his friend to rescue Ariefdien were unsuccessful and he swam to shore for his own safety."
Milnerton rescue goes wrong
Another man was feared drowned after he and a friend tried to help two women in trouble in the water at Milnerton lagoon beach in Cape Town around 16:00, Solomons-Johannes said.
"During the rescue attempt Jerome Booysen, 35, found himself in distress and was swept away by a strong rip current. His friend and the two women were recovered by a surfer."
The three then "absconded from the scene".
The effort to find both Booysen and Ariefdien involved the National Sea Rescue Institute, the SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service's helicopter and the police diving unit.
