As Limpopo and Mpumalanga continue to battle with floods in the area, there are concerns that the spillover from the Blyde River could aggravate the situation in low-lying areas.
Earlier this week, parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and southern Mozambique experienced heavy downpours following a tropical depression in the area.
Flood water is expected to spill over the sides of the Blyde River, potentially sending a torrent of water through the already saturated Lowveld.
The general manager of the Oliphants River Game Reserve, Mario Ceasare, said it was a worrying situation because they could be stuck until the river levels drop.
“We’ve just heard disturbing reports that the Blyde may need to release more water to relieve pressure from the walls, which is disconcerting news.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Water Affairs said there was no damage to the Blyde River Dam wall.
It said because there are no sluice gates, water could only be released in the form of a spillover.
Spokesperson Henriette Anderson said there could however be damage to infrastructure in the area.
