Farmers flee raging veld fire in Boland

Johannesburg - Two structures have been destroyed by a veld fire that's burning out of control in the Slanghoek Valley near Worcester in the Boland, SABC news reported on Sunday.

Some farm owners were voluntarily fleeing their homes as the fire, fanned by strong winds, approaches their properties, the broadcaster said.

It has been raging since Saturday night.

Fifteen fire engines, 150 ground personnel and 3 helicopters were reportedly trying to douse the flames. Bainskloof mountain pass between Wellington and Ceres has been closed due to poor visibility.

There has been minimal damage to the local vineyards at this stage and no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire was unclear.
