The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Hamnet weekly bulletin for Sunday 1 January 2012
And a happy New Year to all Hamnet members and all emergency communication operators around the world!
2011 was quite a busy year – not only in South Africa but more so around the world with many emergencies requiring amateur radio support and experience. We sincerely hope that the New Year will be a relatively quiet year and that when our expertise is required; we will be fully equipped and ready do respond the any call.
In particular I would like to thank Greg Mossop, G0DUB, our Region 1 emergency communications coordinator, for keeping us informed to all the disasters happening around the world and giving us updates and feedback on all the events.
Not forgetting all the other officials around the globe who tirelessly keep all of us abreast of developments as and when they happen. We thank you for your efforts and hope you will continue to keep us informed off al the incidents as the happen.
Locally, we look forward to the New Year and sincerely hope that as in the past we will not be called out too often. However, should the call go out, I am sure we have the commitment to ensure we can supply the necessary!
To the Off Road Rescue Teams around the country as well as the Mountain Club of S.A. and K9 Dog Unit, we wish you all of the very best for this coming year.
To South African Search & Rescue (SASAR) and the various organisations that are represented on the Sub Committee – we thank you for your participation in the past and look forward to working with you in the New Year.
Reporting for Hamnet – this is Francois Botha, ZS6BUU.
