Welcome to this new home of the SAWDOS. The SA Weather and Disaster Information Service (SAWDIS) has changed it's name to the SA Weather and Disaster Observation Service (SAWDOS) as of the 1 January 2012. The new blog site is far from complete and you might think that really not much has changed. I am still working feverishly to install new automated features to this site. This will not only lighten my work load but will bring you near real time information with the click of a button.
The following new features are currently available to our users:
1. Near Real Time updates from the RSOE Emergency and Disaster Information Service: The Hungarian National Association of Radio Distress-Signalling and Infocommunications (RSOE) operates an Emergency and Disaster Information Service (EDIS) to monitor and document all the events on the Earth which may cause disaster or emergency. The EDIS website provides useful information regarding world wide emergency situations and their prevention.
RSOE EDIS information available HERE and can be accessed by clicking on the yellow SAWDOS pages bar just under the main SAWDOS heading.
2. USGS Earthquake Monitor: USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, responsible for monitoring, reporting, and researching earthquakes and earthquake hazards. This page shows a world global map with earthquakes greater that 5 on the Richter-scale. Earthquakes are shown as a star on a global map. Further Information can be obtained by clicking on the magnitude/place heading.
The USGS Earthquake Monitor available HERE and can be accessed by clicking on the yellow SAWDOS pages index bar just under the main SAWDOS heading.

I will inform our readers of any new features that will be added as an when they are installed.
The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.
