The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

A fire that started in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve in Plattekloof on Wednesday morning has been extinguished. The reserve holds the most endangered vegetation in the Cape floral kingdom, known as Renosterveld, which is prone to fires and largely threatened by farming because its soil is fertile.
The vegetation contains rare and endangered plants and animals, including the Cape dwarf chameleon, the Spinnekopblom, and the geometric tortoise.
