BROWN’S FARM: A fire occurred at Phase 6, Brown’s Farm Informal Settlement in Phillipi at approximately 20:24 on Friday, 10 February 2012 that affected one shack. The fire was fortunately contained and it was prevented from spreading to neighbouring properties. One person is left destitute following the incident.
OCEAN VIEW: At 23:15 on Friday, 10 February 2012 a fire destroyed two (2) backyard dwellings at Jupiter Road, Ocean View, resulting in the displacement of six (6) adults and nine (9) children.
SWEET HOMES: In another incident that occurred at 05:31 at the Sweet Homes Informal Settlement in Phillipi a fire destroyed 15 shacks and left 70 people displaced.
No persons sustained injuries and all persons have been accounted for in the three (3) separate fire incidents.
The City’s disaster response teams will be at hand during the course of the day to assist the fire victims with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.
The cause of these fires is still unclear at this stage.
An appeal is made to residents to exercise caution when dealing with open flames to avoid fires from occurring.
