Concern over KZN factory fires

The KwaZulu-Natal Labour Department says it is concerned about the spate of factory fires in the province.

Three factories have gone up in flames in the space of just two weeks.

An explosion at a chemical factory in Jacobs, south of Durban, last month, left two workers dead.

Two days later, a paint factory in Verulam, north of Durban, caught alight.

Firefighters worked for about five hours, before extinguishing the blaze.

In the latest incident, 12 employees were treated for smoke inhalation, when a fire broke out at part of a factory in Tongaat on Wednesday.

The Labour Department's spokesperson Jay Anand says says although each case is being looked at separately, an overall strategic approach is being looked into by officials.

"We want to determine the root cause of the incidents and come up with a strategic plan that will aim to prevent incidents of this nature from occurring," said Anand.

Anand says the plan will involve key stake holders from business, labour, the government and communities.

They will look at ways of raising awareness around health and safety issues in the workplace.
