A severe storm has hit Sydney causing flash flooding and requiring several motorists to be rescued from cars. NSW State Emergency Services (SES) said four rescues involving cars stuck in floodwaters were carried out at Banksia, Rockdale, Padstow Heights and Sylvania. The SES has received 130 calls for assistance, about 100 of those from Sydney area. Most of those calls related to flash flooding and minor property damage. Sydney's southern suburbs have been the worst affected by the storm, with Sutherland experiencing flash flooding. The Bureau of Meteorology says the storms are heading to the northern beaches and Hornsby area. Earlier, the SES received 35 calls for help across the southern part of the state. Hailstones larger than golf balls were reported near the area of Moss Vale. Many traffic lights throughout the Sydney metropolitan area are blacked out or flashing yellow as a result of the storm, the Road Transport Authority advises. Motorists are being advised to drive to the conditions. Several roads in the Sydney metropolitan area have also been closed due to flooding.
