Following its campaign to promote fire safety, Cape Town City are celebrating a decrease in the extent of fatal shack fires.
Hundreds of people are often left destitute weekly after fires at informal settlements across the peninsula.
While the number of fires has not decreased substantially, residents are however reacting much quicker in dealing with fire.
Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the safety campaign was proving to be a huge success.
“What we are seeing is not a significant reduction in the number of fires but a reduction in the extent of the fires."
He added that fewer shacks were being destroyed and there was no loss of life.
