A fire occurred at approximately 21:25 on Monday, 13 February 2012, at the 8th Avenue Informal Settlement in Valhalla Park.
The fire destroyed 11 shacks resulting in the displacement of 44 people.
In the fire a 2 year-old boy went missing during the occurrence of the fire.
The K-9 Unit of the SAPS is searching the affected area in the informal settlement in an attempt to establish whether the child has died in the fire.
The City has provided emergency shelter overnight at the Nooitgedacht Community Hall for families that were affected by the fire.
The City’s disaster response teams will be providing social relief of distress assistance to the fire victims for the following three (3) days.
The humanitarian relief aid will consist of food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.
At this stage it is unclear what caused the fire and the authorities will probe an investigation.
