Earlier today 70 people have been left homeless after four fires occurred earlier today in Cape Town.
Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, the media spokesperson for the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre said “the first fire was at RR Section, Site B, Mew Way, Khayelitsha, at approximately 07:30 this morning that destroyed 8 shacks resulting in the displacement of 27 people”.
The second inferno destroyed a formal house at 36 Eland Street, Delft, that affected 7 people.
In the third incident that occurred at 10:06 the blaze destroyed 4 shacks at the Happy Valley Informal Settlement, Wimbledon Road, Blackheath. Thirteen adults and six children were left homeless.
At 16:04 today a fourth incident occurred at Mandela Park, Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, which engulfed 7 shacks. The fire caused that 17 people were left without homes this afternoon.
Solomons-Johannes said the City’s disaster response teams assisted the victims with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.
No persons sustained injuries during the fires that occurred today; however the City appeals to residents to exercise caution when dealing with open flames; candles, lamps; paraffin stoves; and including electricity connections.
In the four incidents 19 shacks were gutted and 1 formal house sustained fire and smoke damage.
The causes of the fires are under investigation, he said.
