Helicopter makes emergency landing at Cape Town International Airport Helicopter makes emergency landing at Cape Town International Airport

Cape Town: A helicopter of HELI was involved in a hard landing at 17:04 on Thursday, 16 February 2012.

There were no fatalities in the incident, and the two pilots and two passengers on board have not sustained any injuries.

Initial reports received indicated that the helicopter crash landed. Upon investigation by the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre it was established from the pilot in command that the helicopter developed mechanical problems shortly after take-off from its base at the Cape Town International Airport enroute to Franschoek.

According to the pilot in command the rear rotor of the helicopter malfunctioned and an informed decision was made to return to its base.

The helicopter has landed safely on an open field west of Cape Town International Airport with no harm to the crew or civilians.

The repair crew of the helicopter company effected emergency repairs to the aircraft; and a test flight was performed shortly thereafter.

The Commissioner of the South African Civil Aviation Authority in accordance with the aviation laws will be notified regarding the incident to undertake an investigation in the interest of aviation safety.

The Robinson R44 helicopter is a 4-seater, single-engine helicopter that is used for quick air transportation for up to three people; and is powered by a 6-cylinder horizontally-opposed Lycoming O-540 engine.
