Narrow escape for Midlands pilots

Two pilots have had a narrow escape after their light aircraft crashed on an Eston farm in the Midlands shortly after take off.

Graeme Gordon and Tyrone McAdam's Piper four seater plane went down after experiencing technical problems around half past ten yesterday morning before bursting into flames on Angels Way Farm yesterday.

Jan van der Merwe, the farm's manager, says the pilots set off on the short flight as part of a training exercise.

He says he is very relieved neither of the men was seriously hurt.

"They sustained facial injuries and the one pilot back injuries but they've stabilised and they are fine. Tyrone has been sent home and Graeme is just waiting for further x-rays," said van der Merwe.

Van Der Merwe, who also runs the Durban SkyDive Centre from the farm, says the pilots have their licences and were authorised to fly the plane.

"Both pilots are qualified and they both have the ratings for the plane that they were flying."
