The South African Weather Services on Saturday said the centre of tropical cyclone Irina was moving eastward towards the ocean and would not land in Richards Bay.
The weather services said although the impact of the storm would not be as extreme as initially predicted it retained a moderate tropical storm status.
However, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga emergency services were urged to remain on high alert as heavy rains continues.
The cyclone was expected to hit the northern coast of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and neighbouring Mozambique this weekend.
Forecaster Dipuo Tawana said the impact of it would be extensive.
“It’s going to reach all the coastal areas, Maputo, northern KwaZulu-Natal areas and the low veld,” she warned.
