Even though the initial impact of the Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has been weaker than anticipated, Earth is starting to feel the initial influence from the CME.
Also, proton levels continue to increase. We are at a proton storm level of S3 out of 5. That is considered "Strong" and has effects on passengers and crew in high-flying aircrafts at high latitudes (exposure to radiation risk). It can cause noise in imaging systems on satellites, reduction in efficiency in solar panels and the HF radio propagation can be degraded.
The Kp index, which is a measure of how much the magnetosphere is disturbed, has reached 5 giving us a geomagnetic storm level of G1 out of 5.

The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.
