Five injured in train accident

Five schoolchildren were injured when a minibus taxi and a goods train collided at a level crossing on the border of Soweto and Roodepoort, in Johannesburg, on Thursday.

The injured were taken to two hospitals, Johannesburg emergency services spokesman Synock Matobako said.

No fatalities were reported.

“The cause of the accident is unknown, but the kombi was on the level crossing.”

The taxi was carrying about 16 children from West Ridge High School. The driver was not injured in the accident on Main Reef road.

Metrorail spokesman Tony Games said the train was from Transnet Freight Rail (TFR). TFR spokesman Molatwane Likhethe could not immediately be reached for comment.

Netcare 911 and ER24 paramedics were on their way to the scene.
