KwaZulu-Natal Disaster Management teams are on standby as a tropical cyclone approaches the province.
The Department of Co-operative Governance says it's working to evacuate residents in low-lying areas and those close to river banks.
The SA Weather Service has warned that cyclone Irina will hit the northern parts of KZN from tomorrow afternoon.
The heavy rains are expected to last until midweek with up to 400-millimetres expected to fall in places over the next few days.
The Department's Vernon Mchunu says teams are on standby in all municipalities to attend to emergencies.
"We have also issued a warning through municipalities, councillors and ward committees that people who live nearby rivers should try to move to areas which will be less affected," he said.
"If there is a need, we will evacuate people and take them to community halls."
