The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Department on Saturday said two thirds of call outs at fire stations were non-fire related incidents.
The city's JP Smith went out with officials from Belhar fire station on Friday night.
Smith said between 60 to 80 percent of the incidents they tend to involve people who have been drinking.
He said residents did not understand the consequences of abusing alcohol.
“Most of the stabbing and car accidents are alcohol related. When I go out with the, 60 to 80 percent of our calls are alcohol related.”
He said the fire department did a lot of work outside of its primary focus.
“In the last few weeks, we’ve seen an increase in pedestrian accidents, either where the pedestrians are drunk or where drunk drivers have hit children.”
