Flash Flood in Malaysia on Sunday, 01 April, 2012 at 03:45 (03:45 AM) UTC.

The port town was hit with flash floods yesterday, causing thousands to be late for work and schools to be shut. The floods were a result of both heavy rain and high tide, The Star reported. Residents were just recovering from the floods that hit the area on Tuesday, compounding residents’ reactions in Taman Sri Andalas, Taman Selatan, Taman Bayu Perdana, Padang Jawa and Taman Chi Liung. 10 schools were shut down due to the flooding. Water levels rose within an hour after it started pouring at 3.30am yesterday. Within 90 minutes 70mm of rain was recorded, far outstripping the daily average of 40mm. It is learnt that about 70mm of rain was recorded within 90 minutes, compared to the daily average of 40mm. Residents were busy protecting their property and contents as the situation worsened. Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim called for a “a 50-year flood plain” encompassing drainage systems and development guidelines. A 50-year flood plain entails ensures a maximum two percent chance of flooding each year over the next 50 years. He said the Klang Municipal Council, the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), the Public Works Department as well as the district and land offices are filing for applications under the programme. He hoped the federal government would fund the project along with the state government. Khalid denied that a delay in opening the tidal gates caused the floods. He said that there should be planning in anticipation. The mentri besar was speaking at Kampung Delek Community Hall. All 348 tidal gates in the Klang district were working said Selangor DID director Abdul Qashar Osman. He added a new storm water management system needed to be designed together with development guidelines.
