Lion on the loose in KwaZulu-Natal

A lion is on the loose after it escaped near Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, Ezemvelo Wildlife said.

"A member of the public reported seeing a lion around 1am between Intibane lodge and Ophathe game reserve which is along the King Dinuzulu highway in Ulundi," spokesman Musa Mntambo said.

Ezemvelo Wildlife conservation officer Jabulani Biyela visited the area and confirmed that tracks from a lion had been found.

Mntambo said at this stage it was not clear where the lion escaped from.

"Our guys are following the tracks, and we advise people to call us if they see the lion."

Ezemvelo spokesperson Musa Mntambo says rangers found tracks after searching the area where a member of the public claims to have spotted the lion.

Mntambo says it's not clear at this stage when the animal escaped.

"We don't know where it came from, but we know it was seen between Intibane Lodge and Ophathe Game Reseve, which is along the King Dinizulu Highway, in Ulundi, but we're not sure of where it came from at the moment," he said.

He says people who spot the animal should contact Ezemvelo immediately.
