The circumstances regarding the occurrence of these fires are unknown – authorities will launch an investigation.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre appeals to residents to be careful when working with open flames.

When going to bed, residents should isolate electrical devices and extinguish gas burners, candles, lamps and paraffin stoves in order to prevent fires.

During winter months residents that are economic disadvantaged in informal settlements and residential areas are known to be at greater risk of fires, when they make open flame fires to keep warm and leaving it unattended that result in disastrous situations.
