LANGA: At 22:00 on Wednesday, 16 May 2012 a fire destroyed four flats including and 4 wendy houses (backyard dwellings) at 29 Zone 9 in Langa. Twenty two people were left displaced as a result of the fire.
DURBANVILLE: At 15:19 on Thursday, 17 May 2012 a fire destroyed 11 informal structures resulting in the displacement of 37 people at Fisantekraal Informal Settlement, Lichtenburg Street, Durbanville. All persons have been accounted for.
KHAYELITSHA: A fire occurred at 20:43 on Thursday, 17 May 2012 that affected one shack at Monwabisi Park (Endlovini Informal Settlement, Mew Way) near Ndevu Spaza Shop. One adult male sustained fatal burn wounds. The circumstances regarding the occurrence of these fires are unknown – authorities will launch an investigation.
VALHALLHA PARK: A house was destroyed by a fire that occurred at 08:12 on Friday, 18 May 2012 at 159 Angela Street, Valhallah Park (near to Jawoodien Butchery). Eight persons (two adults and six children) that were occupants of the house were left homeless.
The City’s disaster response teams assisted the victims of fire with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.
The cause of these fires is still unclear at this stage.
An appeal is made to residents to exercise caution when dealing with open flames to avoid fires from occurring.
