Cape Town reveals winter readiness plan

CAPE TOWN - At least 52 families in Sir Lowry's Pass Village will be moved to higher ground before the winter rainy season.

This was revealed during a briefing by the City of Cape Town on its winter readiness plan on Wednesday.

In 2011, at least 2,600 informal structures were affected by floods.

Disaster Management's Greg Pillay said, “We will give away flood kits and provide people with more material.”

Mayoral committee member for Roads and Storm Water Brett Herron said they have a detailed plans for informal settlements.

“We have a budget of R11 million set aside, specifically to address the storm water cleaning and short-term remedial needs at informal settlements."

Last week, Sir Lowry's Pass residents clashed with police during a service delivery protest.

The protesters were calling proper houses.

On Sunday, the residents met with authorities to discuss their grievances.

In 2011, areas including the Overberg, Cape Winelands, Eden and Central Karoo districts experienced heavy rain which resulted in flooding.
