Hamnet Weekly Report 27/5/2012.

Four Tropical Cyclones and two earthquakes made the news this week as well as a potential Hamnet involvement in the North West Cape.

Tropical cyclone ALBERTO, like tropical cyclone BERYL, formed over the Atlantic Ocean east of Florida and South Carolina. Both events had minimal humanitarian impact despite high wind speeds being recorded.

Potential rainfall was normal associated with tropical cyclones of this nature and magnitude and wind speeds were around 85kph to 120kph. The tropical cyclones did not reach sufficient strength to cause significant storm surge!

Cyclone BUD developed over the Pacific Ocean and headed east toward Mexico. The cyclone basically rained itself out over the Pacific and by the time it reached the Mexican mainland, it posed no serious threat to the population, despite winds of up to 185kph being measured in its early stages.

Tropical cyclone SANVU out in the northern Pacific Ocean also had little effect on both Japan and North Korea having rained itself out over the Ocean.

Two earthquakes – continents apart occurred firstly between the north and south Japanese islands out at sea and the latter in the northern Atlantic between the Europe and Canada – both simply being enough to be measured on the various seismic sensors scattered across the Globe.

This again emphasises that the earth’s tectonic plates are constantly on the move manifesting itself either as a measureable earthquake or also by volcanic eruptions. This was evident with some relatively quiet volcanoes activity in South America of which Mt. Popocatepetl in Mexico was one which was active during the past week or so.

Locally, all is being set up should HAMNET be required to assist with communication in the Springbok/Kleinzee area to assist with the rescue of miners trapped in a collapsed tunnel in a disused diamond mine near Kleinzee. These illegal miners were caught when a tunnel collapsed and it is extremely dangerous to enter this area to assist with rescue efforts.

We await further instructions from Carel Oberholzer, ZS3OBE in Springbok should our assistance be necessary. A portable repeater and other equipment is already on standby if required.

Reporting for Hamnet, this is Francois Botha, ZS6BUU.
