'Mine rescue operation will continue on Monday'

JOHANNESBURG - Police are investigating illegal mining activity at the Durban Deep Gold Mine, west of Johannesburg.

“We are currently investigating a case of inquest after two illegal miners were crushed to death by a rock at the mine,” said police spokesperson Tshisikhawe Ndou.

The investigation comes after officials from the Johannesburg Emergency Management Service abandoned their search for two bodies trapped underground on Friday.

The search operation was halted because of unsafe conditions at the mine.

Rescue teams freed 15 people at the Roodepoort mine, who were still alive.

There could be more illegal miners trapped underground, emergency services said.

Its spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the search operation would resume on Monday.

Meanwhile, 10 illegal miners remain trapped underground at an abandoned diamond mine, outside Kleinzee in the Northern Cape.

Some 10 others were rescued at the mine, after a tunnel collapsed last week.

Police spokesperson Captain Cherelle Ehlers said the rescue operation was a challenging one.

She says the ground at the mine is “very unstable”, which makes it difficult for rescue workers to do their job.
