Technological Disaster in USA on Friday, 18 May, 2012 at 08:01 (08:01 AM) UTC.

A second-story apartment complex walkway that had partially detached Wednesday night in Southeast Austin collapsed Thursday morning as city officials were interviewing affected residents.Officials had evacuated more than two dozen residents of the Wood Ridge Apartments on Wednesday night over fears that the second-floor walkway could collapse, officials said. Austin Fire Department officials said several residents had called apartment management when they felt the balcony sagging underneath them while they were walking. Structural engineers surveyed the complex in the 1900 block of Burton Drive, north of Oltorf Street east of Interstate 35, and determined the walkway was detaching.

Shortly before noon Thursday, as city officials were questioning residents, the balcony collapsed onto another balcony attached to a building next door, said Ron Potts, assistant division manager at the City of Austin Code Compliance department. As a safety precaution, the residents of six units in that building also were evacuated, he said.Red Cross officials were assisting at least a dozen families, officials said. The newly displaced residents, like the 25 residents from Wednesday night, will be given vouchers to stay at a hotel, but after that, "will be on their own," Potts said. For now, parts of both buildings are under the control of the city's code compliance department, he said. Both areas have been fenced off and public access is limited, Potts said.City workers were evaluating all the walkways and balconies at the complex and could block from public use any additional areas deemed unsafe, Potts said."It's a possibility," he said, especially if workers find evidence of "imminent danger of collapse."Apartment complex officials did not return phone calls seeking comment.Once city officials complete their review, they will hand over control of the fenced-off buildings to complex management and contractors, he said.It will be up to the apartment complex to request new permits and make the repairs, he said. City officials, however, will be involved in the process, he said. The apartments were built in 1972, according to Travis Central Appraisal District records.
