Search for missing fishing boat and crew off Dorset

A Royal Navy warship and a US Navy supply vessel are among the ships searching for a missing fishing boat and its three-man crew off Dorset.

The boat, the Purbeck Isle, was reported missing at about 18:00 BST when it failed to return to Weymouth.

The Coastguard helicopter based at Portland searched fishing grounds along with the Weymouth RNLI boat.

A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said no communication had been made with the vessel.

'Electronic' aids
Cindy Rodaway, watch manager at Portland Coastguard said: "The Coastguard helicopter commenced a search from the air of known fishing grounds of this vessel as soon as we were alerted.

"We have also searched all evening utilising the skills of the lifeboat crew and the crews of the Navy warships and the electronic search aids at their disposal."

Weymouth's all weather lifeboat, the Ernest and Mabel, launched at 19:15 on Thursday while the Lyme Regis inshore lifeboat, the Spirit of Loch Fyne, set out just after 23:00.

The other ships responding the the Coastguard alert were HMS York, a type 42 Destroyer, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Wave Ruler and the US Navy supply vessel, 2nd Lt John P Bobo. The FV Betty G II from Weymouth has also been assisting.
