Hikers marooned on Karbonkelberg

Cape Town - A group of hikers were spending Sunday night stuck on a hiking trail between Llandudno and Hout Bay, below the Karbonkelberg after getting lost.

The NSRI's Bray Geyser said the eight men, aged between 20 and 25, had hiked from the Llandudno Sandy Bay parking area, where they had left their cars.

"It is not clear what they were doing there, they seem to all have wet suits with them," he said.

Geyser said the NSRI had been alerted at about 17:30.

“The NSRI Hout Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Albie Matthews and Nedbank Rescuer I and on arrival on-scene found the men on the shore in good health, but requiring guidance to get out of their predicament.

"At first attempts were made to get them off using our NSRI sea rescue boats, but sea conditions were not favourable.

"As a result, the Western Cape emergency medical services (EMS) and a wilderness search and rescue team were activated."

Gesey said that following a logistics briefing, it was decided that the men should stay there overnight. Emergency supplies were taken to them and they would be lead to safety in the morning.

The emergency supplies, consisting of water, space blankets and food, were delivered by a NSRI rescue boat and floated to the men in water-tight canisters using ropes.

EMS rescue authorities will check in with the men at intervals during the night.

They have been requested to conserve battery power on their cellphones.

"They are not in any immediate danger" Geyser said.
