Powerful Typhoon Disrupts Flight and Railway Services in Japan

TOKYO -- Local officials said a powerful typhoon is wreaking havoc across the mainland of Japan on Tuesday, disrupting transportation services and forcing families to evacuate. Public broadcaster NHK reported that 100 train services had been canceled in Osaka on Tuesday, and over 1,000 people in the western prefectures including Mie and Wakayama were urged to evacuate. The typhoon, the fourth of this year's season, also caused disruptions to airline services in the country with All Nippon Airways canceling over 170 flights. According to Japan Meteorological Agency, typhoon Guchol was heading northeast at a speed of 55 kph, with wind speeds of up to 126 kph near the center. The agency warned of heavy downpours in the prefectures located along the Pacific Ocean through Wednesday noon.
