A KZN woman is lucky to be alive this afternoon after falling from the top of the Howick Falls in the Midlands.
It is believed she had been walking at the top of the falls where locals do their washing and collect water when she slipped and fell just before 1pm.
Miraculously, the woman managed to grab onto a ledge several metres from the top.
The Falls are around 100 metres high and are a popular tourist attraction.
The terrified woman hung from the ledge screaming for help.
Netcare 911's Chris Botha says she was able to hold on until fire fighters, who were first on the scene, arrived.
"The firemen from Howick set up a rapid rope extrication system and they hoisted her to the top of the falls. The paramedics arrived there and they treated her; she had sustained relatively serious injuries," he said.
"She was transported through to a provincial hospital in Pietermaritzburg. She was extremely traumatised and very, very happy to be alive."
