The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Fires in Angola Generating Great Deal of Smoke
A cloud of smoke caused by fires across Angola hangs over the upper part of this image of Africa. Visible in the full image are dozens of individual blazes and plumes of smoke. Visible in the lower part of the image are bodies of water such as the broom-shaped Okavango Delta (center of bottom edge) and Lake Kariba (lower right edge), on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, as well as the white salt flats of the Etosha Pan (lower left edge), in northern Namibia.
