Johannesburg - An Italian national was identified as the pilot who was killed when the L-39 he was flying at the Klerksdorp Air Show crashed on Saturday, North West police said.
"Two planes were flying parallel to each other when Gian Franco Cigione, 49, lost control and crashed into the ground," said Captain Amanda Funani.
She said the planes were showcasing flying acts close to the ground when Cigione crashed.
His plane crashed next to the Klerksdorp cemetery and burst into flames.
Nobody else was injured in the accident.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
