The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Pilot dies in Eastern Cape chopper crash
Eastern Cape emergency services personel have located the wreckage of the helicopter which crashed in the Amathole Mountains on Friday morning.
Police spokesperson, captain John Fobian, says the pilot died in the crash.
He says the pilot was assisting the Department of Water Affairs and Working On Fire in battling a fire in the mountains between Stutterheim and Keiskammahoek when it crashed into the fire.
Fobian says the pilot, who's name has not yet been released, was pilotting a privately owned helicopter at the time.
The civil aviation authority wil begin its probe into the crash on Saturday.
